Sugar Twin

Paper, sugar substitute

1997

Donated by Mark Andre Singer

One of the Museum’s earliest acquisitions, the sugar twin packet has been a source of endless debate.

Some have questioned whether sugar twin is a double at all since it claims to be the “original.”

Still others assert that sugar twin is doubly double, as a twin and as a substitute (they also note that the packaging information appears in two languages).

The Museum’s decision to display only one packet of sugar twin rather than two has also provoked a mixed response.

Some assert that a lone packet fails to convey the “twin” aspect of sugar twin while others are convinced that exhibiting two packets at once would amount to an aesthetic indulgence that has nothing to do with doubling.
