These twin mailboxes are a physical manifestation of the language phenomena known as “The Royal We.” Royal individuals tend to confuse their (singular) person with their (plural) empire. They say things like: “we didn’t mean to say that” or “our stomach hurts.” Under such circumstances, two mail boxes are an absolute necessity.
